Year 3

Welcome to Year 3!

In Year 3, we are a happy, hardworking, resilient and determined team who have a hunger for learning and ambition, with a growth mind-set to succeed.

In our Numeracy lessons, we follow Inspire Maths. The scheme of work encourages the children to master all aspects of maths through the use of concrete manipulatives, pictoral representations and abstract symbols to model problems. We cover a wide variety of units, including: addition and subtraction of numbers within 10,000, multiplication, division, mental calculations, money, length, mass and volume, bar graphs, fractions, time, angles, and area and perimeter.

In our Literacy lessons, we cover a wide range of reading and writing through the Power of Reading Teaching Sequences from CLPE.  We also follow some stand-alone units that are based on our class texts or subjects linked to our themes.  We encourage the children to read and write a variety of different genres, such as; stories, descriptions, poetry, character/setting descriptions, recounts, letters, newspapers and instructions.  In addition, our Group Reading sessions give the children additional reading opportunities, including comprehension based around our class text for that half term.

In Year 3, the children work on the Creative Learning Journey - which encompasses the foundation subjects.  Our theme for the Autumn term is ‘Ancient Antics’, where we learn about the Ancient Egyptian and Ancient Indus Valley civilisations and compare and contrast the two.  In the Spring Term we learn about ‘Heroes and Villains’, where we focus on influential figures and changes in social history during the 20th century.  In the Summer Term our theme is ‘Scrumdiddlyumptious’ where we learn about nutrition and the importance of exercise on our bodies, as well as food miles and Fair Trade.

PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Emotional) is a very important part of our Year 3 development and learning.  We reflect upon current affairs as well as important learning linked to everyday lives and the children take part in thought-provoking discussions. Ultimately, the aim of these sessions is to develop a wider understanding of the world and how to be successful within it.

Each week, we do 2 hours of high-quality P.E.  This year, our timetables include the following sports: Dance, multi-sports, football, tennis, golf, athletics, swimming, cricket and netball.
