Mathematics Overview
At St Ives, we take a mastery approach to the teaching and learning of mathematics to ensure our children are resilient learners who become life-long mathematicians. We strive to equip our children with the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to solve a range of mathematical problems through fluency in numbers and mathematical reasoning.
In EYFS, we provide daily experiences and opportunities for our children to explore and apply their mathematical skills. Maths in EYFS is delivered through a combination of adult led activities, small group activities, independent activities and child-initiated play.
In Key Stage 1 and 2 we use the Inspire Maths programme which follows the Singapore approach to teaching maths. Inspire Maths provides a mastery approach to teaching and learning mathematics. It builds firm foundations and a deep understanding of mathematical concepts using a concrete-pictorial-abstract approach, emphasising mastery to help children become confident and independent mathematicians. Manipulatives are used to scaffold and challenge the learning for all children and open-ended questions are used as a vital tool for children to demonstrate their procedural knowledge and conceptual understanding.
Daily opportunities are provided to focus on the teaching of key number facts and the fluency of maths. We encourage cross curricular opportunities wherever possible, so that key concepts are reinforced and consolidated in real life contexts.
